MOBILE LIVING EXHIBITION/CONFERENCE MAY 21–23, 2006 NYC
The future has arrived! The burgeoning movement toward a global, nomadic lifestyle is now a reality. Mixing art, design and technology, Mobile Living will feature the unparalleled advancements of our evolving existence presented in a curated museum-style format and is made possible by generous support from Calty Design Research and Toyota/Scion.
Live like a nomad This groundbreaking 18,000-square-foot exhibition will include examples of mobile living such as Christopher Deam’s Airstream CCD, Adam Kalkin’s Push Button House shown at Art Basel Miami, R. Buckminster Fuller’s “Fly’s Eye Dome,” and concept cars by Toyota and Scion which show the future of life and culture. These and many other interactive exhibitors will be presented, including Arts Corporation, HAY, MOD - Modern Objects and Design, Modus, Offecct, Office of Mobile Design, CP Company, Art Office,.
Let’s talk! Panel discussions will include speakers addressing the current and future aspects of nomadic living. Among the panelists are top curators, designers and artists, including Paola Antonelli, MoMA; Brett Littman, PS1; David McFadden, Museum of Arts and Design; Karim Rashid, Karim Rashid Inc.: Ada Tolla, Lotek; Tucker Viemiester, Rockwell Red; Adam Kalkin, Kevin Hunter, Calty Design Research, Inc.: Jennifer Siegal, Office of Mobile Design; Christopher Deam, CCD; Douglas Fanning, The University of the Arts.
Create an art installation! “Happy Campers”, a collaborative of four Swedish design groups will create installations on-site with the interactive help of the public. They will set up a metaphorical “campground” in order to explore issues of collaboration, social interaction, our relationship to nature, and mobile living. Other museum quality installations include the HOME House exhibition of affordable/green housing, and Cabin Culture, a project by graduate students at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia.
Bring it home! The Tiny Living Shop will offer design items that cater to the global nomad. Travel-related objects such as foldable, inflatable, double-use and stackable items will be represented as well as publications on the subject that will be available for purchase. Caravan, the mobile retail concept, will be traveling between Mobile Living and satellite venues for an on-the-run shopping experience.
Mobile Living is presented by Exhibitions International and International Design Network Foundation, both 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations dedicated to creating educational programming about art and design. This curated event will take place at Skylight Studios, Soho, NYC. Zipcar will shuttle attendees to and from Mobile Living and other coordinated satellite locations, including the New Museum, Whitney at Altria, and Tribeca Grand Hotel, where complimentary programming and educational components will be presented.
